School Dress Code ...

Now that the colder weather is upon us it is opportune to remind parents and students of the dress code requirements at Eastern Hills Senior High School. This reminder is a request for parent’s to support the school in their application of dress code.

The dress code provides the standard of what is acceptable in relation to the clothing worn by students at the school. The Department of Education supports a dress code for all public school students as essential in promoting a positive image of the school. The dress code assists all students to participate fully in school life and helps create a sense of identity and school culture in which every student experiences a sense of belonging.

The School established its dress code in participation with staff, students and parents. It is approved and supported by the School Board. It follows the directive of the Department of Education in as far as it is similar for all students; is practicable; provides a degree of choice; includes gender neutral options such as shorts and pants; and provides suitable clothing for sports or physical education.

There is a school dress shop on site which supplies all approved items and we are flexible enough to allow a parent who chooses to purchases alternative items from another supplier to do so as long as these items comply with dress code style and colour.

The School believes that maintaining a dress code supports students whilst at school and ultimately helps to prepare them for their future careers, where they will often be required to wear a uniform, or at the very least adhere to a dress code.

Year 12 students are permitted to wear the Leavers Jacket for their Year Group

The school shirt must be worn as part of the uniform. It is not acceptable to wear a blue crew necked jumper with no school shirt underneath as students are not recognisable as members of the school community. Where a long sleeve T-shirt is worn underneath a school shirt for extra warmth, it needs to be white or navy. Black undershirts are not acceptable.

Skirts and shorts must be of modest length. The rule of thumb is that the hem should not be higher than fingertips when the arms are extended flat against the sides of the body. It would be appreciated if parents could check the length of skirts and shorts as there have been some instances of non-compliance with this requirement.

The dress code includes:

Years 7, 8 & 9

EHSHS blue shirt with logo

Navy trousers, skirts or shorts

EHSHS blue tartan dress

EHSHS navy jumper

EHSHS microfiber jacket

White socks, navy or black stockings

Enclosed footwear..

Years 10, 11 & 12

EHSHS white shirt with logo

Navy trousers, skirts or shorts

EHSHS blue tartan dress

EHSHS navy jumper

EHSHS microfiber jacket

White sock, navy or black stockings

Enclose footwear

As previously advised, the hooded jackets (hoodies) are not part of the uniform of the school and are not available for purchase from the uniform shop. Students who purchase navy jumpers from external suppliers should not purchase hoodies as they will not be able acceptable to wear at the school.

The white polar sport shirt has also been removed from the clothing items available for purchase and should no longer be worn by students unless they are participating in a physical education lesson. Students need to change into the school shirt immediately after the physical education period. This has also been previously corresponded to parents.

Leggings must be navy in colour and are only to be worn under dresses, skirts or shorts (for extra warmth). It is inappropriate to wear leggings in lieu of trousers and they will not be accepted as part of the school uniform.

We also do not accept items with highly visible trade logos.

The school’s response to non-compliance with dress requirements includes a number of communications with parents requesting assistance with uniform concerns and explaining consequences of student’s ignoring meeting the standard required. Continued non-compliance will result in loss of good standing and the probability of detention at lunch time on each occasion of non-compliance.

It is not acceptable for students to disregard requirements of school dress and deliberately non-conform to what is considered to be a fair and reasonable contemporary dress standard.

I am seeking your support as together, working in partnership, we can maintain the high standards expected of our students and the positive image of the school in the community.
